FREE Sleep Disorder Lecture
Free Community Health Lecture on Sleep Disorders
New Island Hospital is offering a free community health lecture on Sleep Disorders, on Monday, March 16, 2009 at 6:30 pm in the Ambulatory Surgery Waiting Area of the hospital.
Sleepiness is a contributing factor to many motor vehicle and industrial accidents. Untreated insomnia can lead to depression and medical problems. Tiredness diminishes concentration and interest in activities of life.
Snoring is a sign of a sleep disorder. People who have sleep apnea, one of the many sleep disorders; actually stop breathing several times during the night. As they struggle to start breathing again they awaken briefly, usually without realizing it, and then return to sleep. A typical apnea sufferer may repeat hundreds of these episodes per night. If not treated, Obstructive Sleep Apnea may lead to problems with the heart, lungs and kidneys.
New Island Hospital's Center for Sleep Medicine offers a comprehensive program including a sleep study test performed at the Center. This state-of-the-art facility has four patient testing rooms and will expand to six rooms in the near future. It offers the latest technology in diagnosing sleep disorders in a comfortable, contemporary setting.
Sleep Apnea may be treated by one or a combination of therapies including, dental appliances, weight loss, and/or a breathing device called a CPAP or surgery. Narcolepsy and restless leg syndrome are treated with medications. Insomnia is treated primarily by behavioral approaches including a relearning of sleep habits. People experiencing intense snoring, restless leg syndrome, tiredness upon waking or during the day, can discuss these problems with their physician or call the Center at (516) 520-2521 for a referral. Please call Community Relations at 516-520-2487 to reserve a seat at this lecture.
