Purchase Navy SEAL Lt. Michael P. Murphy Medallion

Navy SEAL Lt. Michael P. Murphy Medallion

Lt. Michael Murphy grew up on Long Island, entered the elite Navy SEALs and was killed at age 29 in a covert operation along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border. He led a four-man special reconnaissance unit that was secreted into the Hindu Kush Mountains in June 2005.

The unit was trailing a high-ranking terror leader when they were ambushed by scores of insurgent fighters. A troop transport helicopter that sped to their rescue crashed after being hit by a rocket-propelled grenade. All eight Navy SEALs and eight Army Commandos aboard were killed.

Petty Officer Marcus Luttrell, the lone survivor described Lt. Murphy as, "an iron-souled warrior of colossal, almost unbelievable courage in the face of the enemy."  He was shot when he climbed to higher ground and into the line of fire to send an electronic call for help. Mortally wounded, Lt. Murphy completed the call, and continued fighting. It was these actions that bestowed this nation's highest combat award, to Lt. Murphy, the Medal of Honor.

In memory of Navy SEAL Lt. Michael P. Murphy, New Island Hospital is offering custom, numbered medallions inscribed with the Navy SEAL Trident, Lt. Murphy's image and the words, "In Memory of Our Fallen Brothers
."  Each medallion is $20 and all proceeds will benefit the Emergency Department of New Island Hospital.
