New Volunteer President Appointed

Jacqueline  Alm has been appointed to the position of, President of the Volunteers at New Island Hospital. Jackie has volunteered at New Island for over ten years and is the Coordinator of the Toy Program at the hospital.

Through letter writing and door-to-door efforts, Jackie successfully solicited huge numbers of donations of brand new toys and stuffed animals. She created a "designer" thank you package consisting of, a personalized certificate with the child's name and date of surgery, a thank you to the child for coming to our hospital, and the toy or stuffed animal. The cellophane welcome bags are custom designed and decorated by the local girl/boy scout troops or Jackie does them herself. The entire package is tied with a personalized tag made out to the individual child. Toys and stuffed animals are age/sex appropriate and Jackie ensures that if there is a holiday, and we are not in our offices, such as July 4th, she comes in the day before to check the operating room schedule so that all of the children who come to New Island for pre-scheduled surgery will have a custom designed welcome package.

Jackie is also the winner of the Volunteer Hero Award from the Long Island Business News, saluting volunteer heroes in healthcare. Her new responsibilities will be taken on with energy and gusto as that is her style.

What motivates her? According to Jackie, "I have a lot of blessings in my life, and this is my way of giving back. If you would like to volunteer at New Island Hospital please call Human Resources at 516-520-2225.
