Public Reporting & Quality Monitoring
Patient Satisfaction... and what it means to you and our Community

New Island Hospital takes very seriously our responsibility of rendering high quality and compassionate care to the community we serve.  For the past decade we have solicited the feedback, thoughts and opinions of our patients through mail surveys, and within the last two years have added a telephone survey.  This assists us in make meaningful improvements to serve you better.

In 2002 the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) asked the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) to develop a survey to measure patient perceptions of care that would be a standard survey used by every acute care hospital throughout the country.  This survey, called HCAHPS (Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems), is designed to provide accurate comparisons of hospitals that might be helpful in choosing a hospital.

Because of our commitment to excellence in patient care, New Island Hospital has been amongst the very first hospitals to voluntarily participate with CMS in surveying patients.  In March 2008 this information will be publicly shared along with other hospitals that have volunteered to publicly share the opinions of their patients - a Public Report Card.  Hospitals that have done poorly can "opt out" of reporting their scores at this time. Therefore, the only scores currently being reported compare many of the best performing hospitals, with the possibility that the poorer performers have chosen NOT to publicly report their performance.

New Island Hospital is proud to present our report card, and to use this opportunity to even further improve our care.

Public reporting means disclosing how well a hospital is doing in a report card style format. This transparency of performance is reported using national standards for collecting and reporting information from a patient's perspective of their hospital care. Our major HCAHPS results are listed below.  Scoring is rated from 1 to 10 (1 being the worst and 10 the best), or, from 1 to 4 scale, (1 being the worst and 4 being the best).

New Island Hospital's HCAHPS Report Card

  • Overall Rating of New Island Hospital:
    84% of our patients rated our hospital very good to excellent (scores of 7 to 10); Indeed, almost half (44%) rated us excellent (scores of 9 or 10 on a 1-10 scale).

  • Willingness to Recommend New Island Hospital:
    89% of patients said they would recommend us to their friends and families:
    59% said definitely yes (score of 4 on a 1-4 scale);
    30% said probably yes (score of 3 on a 1-4 scale).

New Island Hospital is dedicated to continually improving our quality of care and performance.

Please review our detailed current Report Card below, which reflects over 300 discharged patients surveyed from April 2007 through March 2008.  Updated information will be reported every 3 months. If you are a patient at our hospital, we thank you in advance for taking the time to complete the written surveys we regularly send out, and /or to answer the telephone surveys if we call you. Thank you for helping us improve!
