Hospital ServicesAdmittingThe Admitting Department takes information from patients and prepares a chart that follows the patient throughout the hospital stay. Patients are also given a folder with patient information concerning Patient Rights, Advanced Directives and hospital services.Ambulatory SurgeryThis private and separate unit is designed for patients requiring a less than one-day stay for surgical procedures. Patients recover in our post anesthesia area or are brought back to the Unit immediately after surgery. Private parking is provided for your convenience.Balance CenterThe Balance Center operating in conjunction with Continuing Care, LLC, a leading provider of out-patient balance testing, is a vital new initiative. The Center diagnoses and treats patients suffering from dizziness, vertigo, difficulty judging distance and those with a history of falling. If necessary, out-patient rehabilitation is provided by the hospital’s vestibular trained physical therapists. Please call 516-520-2280 to schedule an appointment.Case Management / Social WorkThe Case Management Team consists of Registered Nurses and Social Workers who provide a comprehensive approach to discharge planning for post hospital care, delivery of services /equipment or placement in an after care facility. The team is available Monday through Friday 9am to 5pm and Social Work Saturday 8:30am to 4:30pm. A social worker is available 24/7 for crisis and emergency intervention.Chronic Ventilator UnitThis unit offers patients who require mechanical ventilation a bridge between critical care and a rehabilitative or skilled nursing facility. Registered nurses are specially trained to manage a ventilator and to assess lung functioning.Community RelationsCommunity Relations attends and supports various activities within our surrounding communities. The hospital provides free programs such as monthly medical educational lectures, and Prostate and Osteoporosis Screening; we also provide space to various community groups that meet in the hospital free of charge.Critical Care UnitThis unit provides a high level of specialized care for patients whose conditions merit closer than normal attention and supervision. Click Here to Open the pamphlet Diabetes Services - 516.520.2214Emergency Department (ED)The E.D. is designed, staffed and equipped to evaluate and treat all types of adult and pediatric patients 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Patients and their families are greeted at the door by a concierge. A registered nurse assesses all patients entering the ED. This triage nurse will ask pertinent questions regarding medical history and present illness. Patients with emergent conditions are seen immediately. Other patients will be assigned to specialized areas of the ED depending on their needs.Endoscopy UnitOur private outpatient unit provides both an upper endoscopy that visualizes the upper digestive tract and a colonoscopy that examines the large intestine.Financial InformationAdmission requirementsInsurance billing information must be provided within 24 hours, especially on an Inpatient admission, to ensure that timely notification is made to your insurance carrier. Failure to notify them can result in payment delays or the entire service being denied.If you do not have any insurance coverage, you may qualify for benefits under a Federal or State entitlement program. Additionally, the hospital offers a community assistance program called Charity Care. If you believe that you may be eligible for Charity Care, and you do not have medical insurance, please contact the Financial Counselor's office at (516) 520-2507 for more information. Hyperbaric and Wound Healing CenterOur Center provides comprehensive wound care services for the treatment of chronic, non-healing and/or poorly healing wounds. These services are delivered by physicians and staff specializing in advance wound healing and Hyperbaric Medicine. Our highly specialized team of medical physicians, nurses, and technicians work cohesively to attain outcomes with a 90% success rate, far higher than the national industry average. The Center is open from 7am to 8pm, Monday through Friday and 7am to 12 noon on Saturdays to meet your special needs. Testing categories include Anatomical Pathlogy, Blood Bank, Chemistry, Hematology and Microbiology.LithotripsyThis procedure uses sound waves that pass easily through the body, but are strong enough to break up kidney stones. This procedure is performed in the operating room utilizing our Ambulatory Surgery Unit.Medical RecordsAll patient information contained in the medical record is confidential and stored in the Medical Records Department. If you need a copy of your medical record, a written release is required.Medical/Surgical UnitsThese units are staffed with Registered Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses, Nursing Assistants and clerical staff to provide care to patients admitted for medical problems or surgical procedures.Nutritional ServicesThis department plays a major role in recovery by providing specialized diets and nutritious meals for patients. A Registered Dietitian visits all patients on restricted diets to discuss nutritional needs.Patient RelationsThis department provides an avenue for patients, families and visitors to seek solutions to problems or concerns, by acting as liaison between the patient and hospital staff.PharmacyThe Pharmacy fills medication orders that the physician prescribes for the individual patient need. The Pharmacy ensures that the correct medication and dosage is filled and delivered to the patients unit.Physical TherapyThis department provides rehabilitation for patients experiencing neuromuscular, orthopedic and other disabilities through physical means such as exercise, heat, electrotherapy and functional activities.Physician Referral ServiceNew Island Hospital Medical Staff has 650 physicians who provide the most advanced care in their fields. RespiratoryStaffed 24 hours, seven days a week by New York State licensed Respiratory Therapists and Technicians, this department provides oxygen and nebulized medications ordered by the patient's physician.Center for Sleep MedicineThe Center for Sleep Medicine will diagnose and recommend appropriate treatments to address all symptoms of sleep disorder, and the Center has recently expanded to six overnight sleep study suites. Your sleep test can be scheduled quickly without waiting. Our hotel-like suites are equipped with queen-sized beds, private baths, flat screen TVs, and sophisticated monitoring equipment.
Step Down UnitThis unit represents an intermediate level of care, between critical care and the regular nursing care units. The unit provides specialized nursing care to adult and geriatric patients who require close observation and monitoring of their heart and lung functioning.Swallowing, Speech & Voice DisordersThe Center provides a comprehensive variety of treatment modalities for children and adults.
